Cat that licked off a lot of hair off his belly.......?

I have a boy fixed cat that for some reason a few months ago started to lick his belly a lot. He now has what looks like a shaved belly with short hairs and it is a growing spot! He is making it into a daily habbit and I cant get him to stop! He just licks and bites himself and now his hair is all short and I can see the pink of his skin through his hair! He dosent have fleas or lice and he is stricktly a house cat, havent changed his diet or anything, what do you think? I want to take him to the vet but am asking you all first.

You may want to bring your cat to your vet to have him checked. Hair loss can be anything from fleas to allergies to more serious health problems. Even just one flea can cause weird allergic reactions in cats and stress can also do wonky things to a cat. Something as small as moving the litter box a few feet can affect a cat greatly.

We have a female cat who has licked all the hair off of her belly. One thing that helped is called Feliway. It is a diffuser you plug into an outlet which mimics natural pheromones that cats produce in their cheek glands. There is no smell and it helps end some of the nervous licking and scratching. You can get it from petsmart or online thru ww.drsfostersmith.com or other vet supply places.

It hasn't helped all of the licking but she seems much calmer and some of the hair is beginning to grow back.

Again, I would strongly suggest you bring your cat to the vet just to make sure there are no underlying health problems.

He may have developed a food or environmental allergy. Its good that you want to take him to the vet, only your vet will be able to tell you for sure!

My cat has just done the same - pink belly showing, hair going off her tail and her sides. I took her to the vet and she was giving a quarterzone injection - not much they can really do, she seems fine otherwise. This can be put down to stress for food allergies, or fleas (which you say it isn't) or just because ... Take him to the vet just to check it out anyway.

If it is an allergy then some cortisone may help. If it is just a nervous reaction to some unknown and you want him to stop put some hot sauce on his belly. That should make him stop. It will make him think twice about his nervous habit of licking his belly.

A trip to the vet is certainly the smart thing to do. I would suggest a appointment on Monday if at all possible.

Allergy. I did not think my cat had fleas but turned out he did and was very allergic. Yours might not have fleas but some other allergy. Try changing food.

To be sure about fleas put him on a light colored cloth and comb him with a fine toothed comb. Dark specs on the cloth means fleas as that is flea dirt.

He might be stressed out. If you have introduced another animal or been away on vacation, or something of that nature he may be pulling fur out. My grandpa has a cat that did that when he moved and both times he brought another cat into the house. If you think that this might be the situation I suggest you see a vet. Good luck.
